Burial Info: First Catholic Priest Ordained In The United States. Badin was educated at Montaigu College, Paris and the Sulpician Seminary, Orleans, and left from Bordeaux for the American mission in 1791 in the company of Benedict Joseph Flaget and Jean Baptiste Marie David. He was ordained in 1793 by Archbishop John Carroll of Baltimore, Maryland and was immediately dispatched to the Kentucky mission where he was instrumental in strengthening the Catholic presence there for many years. He returned to France briefly, having accepted the position of parish priest of Millaney and Marreilly-en-Gault, near Orleans, in 1820. Returning to the United States in 1828, he spent the remainder of his religious career in northern Indiana and southern Michigan, serving the Pottawottamie Native Americans along Saint Joseph’s River, and securing for $6000 a tract of 524 acres where he helped the foundation of an orphanage and college which evolved into Notre Dame University. In 1846 he was pastor of the French settlement known as Bourbonnais Grove in Kankakee County, Illinois.
About 1850 Badin returned to Cincinnati. Although his friend Bishop Fenwick had died in 1832, his successor, Bishop John Baptist Purcell offered the aging missionary a place at the bishop’s residence. Father Badin also served at St. Mary’s Church in nearby Hamilton, Ohio.[11] He died at the old episcopal residence on Plum Street in 1853, and was buried at the cathedral crypt. In 1906 his body was re-interred at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana in the recently completed replica log chapel on the site of the chapel Badin had erected there eight decades earlier
