Notes: From Fr. Gorman — The bishop (Hailanadiere) appointed Stephen [Etienne] Chartier, the priest who had accompanied them, [The Sisters of Providence] the successor of Michael Shawe at Madison. The chief importance of his short pastorate was the opening of the missions in Jenninps County which were larg:ely the result of the Madison railroad. Although the Catholics in this region had probably been visted by Shawe, the chief results of pastoral activity did not accrue until Chartier begen his visits. There were at least four centers in this district settled by both Irish and German immigrants. At St. Anne, where a church, dating possibly to 1835, existed in the center of an immense forest, Chartier began the parish records February 1,1841. Chartier “conditionally” joined the Congregation of the Holy Cross in October 1842. Chartier left the community of Holy Cross on March 22, 1843 and went to the diocese of New Orleans where he vas appointed pastor of St. Paul church, Avoyelles
