Notes: Rev. John Baptiste Chasse (1816-1879): Fr. Chasse was born at Rennes, Brittany, France. He was originally a member of the Congregation of Jesus & Mary (Eudists), a missionary society. He was with a group of Eudists who came to Vincennes to form St. Gabriel College. He was a subdeacon when he arrived, and was ordained a deacon and priest at Vincennes.
In Indiana, Fr. Chasse was an assistant at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Vincennes and also taught Latin at St. Gabriel College. He later taught in the diocesan seminary and also at a nearby boys’ orphanage. He was assigned to St. Simon Church in Washington, Indiana in 1855, and remained there until 1866, when he began to have health problems. He took a trip to Europe to regain his health and then was assigned to St. Joseph Church in Terre Haute from 1866-1872. In 1872, he was appointed the ecclesiastical superior of the Sisters of Providence at St. Mary-of-the-Woods, and remained in that capacity until his death in 1879.
