“In December of 1873, Reverend Anthony A. Schenk became the second resident pastor of St. Ambrose and oversaw the completion of a new school in 1874 at the cost of $10,000. The structure, built on the corner of Carter and South streets, was called the St. Ambrose Academy and Day School. The teachers were Sisters of Providence.” [https://www.stambroseseymour.org/About-Us]
“The successor … was Rev. Anthony A. Schenk who took up his duties on December 10, 1897. He was the first American-born priest to administer the affairs of the parish, having been born in Posey County, February 12, 1849. He had studied at St. Meinrad and at St. Joseph, Bardstown, and was ordained November 2, 1873. He had been stationed previously at St. Ambrose Church, Seymour (1873-1887) and at St. Joseph Church, Vanderburg County (1887-1897), at both of which places he had done excellent work. In Brookville he was successful in winning the confidence not only of the Catholics but also of the non-Catholics. To add a personal note, it is remembered that he admired fine horses and that he owned and drove a noble trotter and road horse which was the envy of the countryside.” [Saint Michael Catholic Church Brookville Indiana A Sesquicentennial History 1845-1995 p. 61]
