REVEREND HENRY J. VERST, age 76, died Wednesday, July 15, 1953 at Saint Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. Henry Verst was born November 21, 1876 in Louisville, Kentucky to Henry Verst and Caroline Tonjes. When he was a young boy he moved with his parents to a farm in Floyd County, Indiana just south of Starlight, Clark County. He first attended school at Saint John’s School at Starlight. Later he studied for the priesthood at Saint Meinrad Seminary and was ordained June 9, 1906.
Father Verst served as pastor of Saint Mary of Knobs from 1934 until 1938. While serving there he wrote and published a “History of St. Mary Parish and a story of Floyd Knobs: early settlements, local Catholic Churches and a description of the Knobs, 1800 – 1938.” Father Verst was also the former chaplain of Saint Edward Hospital in New Albany, Indiana.

Father Verst’s body arrived at Saint John’s Church at Starlight on Friday night to lie in state until a Requiem Mass was held Saturday, July 18, by the Reverend Paul Schulte, Archbishop of Indianapolis Diocese. Interment was at Saint John Cemetery close to his stepmother’s and father’s grave sites.
